How To Use Intention To Reach Your Goals

Well, your intentions are your hopes, your desires, your aim for something to happen, or for how you should live today.

I’m going to discuss “How To Use Intention To Reach Your Goals”.

Many of you know I’m a physical therapist and I own my own orthopedic physical therapy practice. Now, the other day, I got asked to give a presentation on how to treat the complicated patient.

Now, I see a lot of complicated chronic pain patients, very often spine patients, and they may have had several other kinds of treatments before they’ve seen me.

And they can often have a  chronic pain mindset where all they can focus on is pain and problems and it’s hard for them to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

And when I was giving this presentation, I talked about having the intention;

that I have the intention for every person that I see that they’re going to improve, that they’re going to get better, that they’re going to heal and be well. And I want that patient to know that I have that intention because it helps to improve their mindset, so that they can have and start to believe the intention that they can get better.

Now, my intention to have every person heal and for every person to improve their functional outcomes with their lives, leads me down the road to set goals and treatment plans that will allow that person to go down that path so that they can break that chronic pain cycle and get to a point where they can lead a more functional life that is pain free.

And it made me think about how that overflows into our daily lives.

Kristin Armstrong said,

“We either live by intention or we exist by default”.

Now think about that. We’d live by intention, or we exist by default because very often what happens is we go through, day by day, and just reacting to the external environment. This happens and that happens. We just respond to what happens to us during our day.

And I think we forget to live with intention.  We forget to live life on purpose.

Now our intentions by default should be positive ones. It’s what our aims are, what our desires are, what our hopes are. 

Wayne Dyer said…

“Our Intentions Create Our Reality”.

So, we want to focus on what are our intentions. What we want for ourselves.

And intentions just left by themselves are really only hopes and wishes and dreams. Now, I believe if your positive intentions, which are those hopes, those desires, those aims to come into being, we need to translate those intentions into specific goals.

And then once we have those specific goals, that can be translated into the actions that are necessary to be taken, to have those goals become a reality.

But those goals that we want to reach have to first, start with the positive intentions that we have… those aims, those desires, those hopes for what we want to happen.

You’ve heard me talk about my positive mindset loop, excuse me, it’s really a neutral mindset loop.

If we have positive thoughts and beliefs about ourself, which are also positive intentions; our hopes, our aims, our desires for what we want to happen. This will lead us to positive actions.

And then there is that space between our thoughts, our beliefs, our intentions, and our actions. We can set specific goals for ourselves. And now what specific goals we can plan out the actions that are necessary to take, to have us reach those goals. And those actions done repetitively are going to give us the results that we want.

So just like wishes and wants that are only spoken and never written down in specifics, usually result in nothing happening. 

Good intentions are only that; they’re good intentions unless they lead to specific goals that are set for yourself. That then lead to plans that set out the actions that are necessary for you to reach your goals or have those intentions become realized.

So to bring it home and review, the key to intentions is to have positive intentions, positive hopes, and desires and aims that you can then translate into specific goals for yourself that will lead to the plans to take specific actions that will help you reach your goals.

So live life intentionally live life on purpose, and that will lead you towards reaching the goals that you want to accomplish.
